Downloading YouTube Videos

Teachers are often confronted with the problem of wanting to show a YouTube video without all of the content that appears on a YouTube page. Also, because of bandwidth problems you can get better playback if you play the video from your own computer. TubeSock is a $15 program that lets you download YouTube videos. Go to http://stinkbot.com/Tubesock/ for more info and to purchase the program.

Google Custom Search

You can create a Google Custom search engine very easily. A custom search engine will let you tell Google which websites may be included in the search. To try one take a look at the custom search engine by Lucy Gray.

A Chicago-based computer science teacher created a Custom Search Engine limited to sites for her middle school students to conduct web research.

If you want to set up your own custom search engine take a look at the information below.

Have a website or collection of sites you'd like to search over? With Custom Search Engine, you can harness the power of Google to create a search engine tailored to your needs.
Create a search engine tailored to your needs
* Include one website, multiple websites, or specific webpages
* Host the search box and results on your own website
* Customize the colors and branding to match your existing webpages
* Learn more with our featured examples, developer documentation, and FAQs

More custom search engines by educators are at:

The search engines below are good examples of Custom Search Engines built by educators. They can help students find reliable information by restricting a search to trusted sources of the educators' choosing. Try each one out with the sample query links provided. If you find one you like, you can add its search box to your personalized Google home page with the "Add to Google" button.

Math + Science + Technology = a great combination!

In standard math students have completed a unit on data collection and appropriate displaying of data. To culminate the unit we further explored the environmental issues they have been investigating in science. Students developed questions to highlight some of these concerns and conducted a survey. With the help of Mr. Bonavitacola, students developed excel spreadsheets and created graphs from same. Students have been encouraged to incorporate the graphs into their science research paper as original data.

Integrating Literacy & Technology into the Geography classroom!

During the month of January, seventh grade social studies students integrated literacy into the geography classroom. The students were beginning to learn about the region of Latin America. To create connections across the curriculum the students read the book Lupita Manana by Patricia Beatty. The book gave students a look into the lives of two young Mexican siblings trying to get over the border into America. It allowed the students to put a story and personality to the controversial issue of illegal immigration that our country is facing today. As a culminating project to the unit on immigration and Latin America the students created a Comic Life project based on the book they read. Using digital cameras the students reenacted the major scenes from the book and took pictures. They then imported the pictures into Comic Life and created a comic to show the major events and struggles from the book. The students also had the opportunity to add an epilogue to the story. And some even turned their comics into movies using the iMovie program and voice overs.

STN National Convention

ETV is an affiliate of the S
tudent Television Network, the nations only scholastic broadcasting network.
Harold and I had a great opportunity to attend The Student Television Network national convention in Anaheim, CA. It was an opportunity for scholastic broadcast students and teachers to learn from professionals, and from each other, during a fast-paced three-day event. I enjoyed meeting teachers from Hawaii, Texas, Florida and other parts of New Jersey. One of my favorite sessions I attended was designed for teachers to compare curriculums. This was a great chance to discuss different possibilities for teaching television broadcasting. For more info check out their website www.studenttelevision.com
and check out an ETV show at http://www.wyckoffschools.org/eisenhower/etv/index.html

Digital Memoirs

As part of the Personal Narrative writing in 8th grade, the students completed Digital Memoirs in Mrs. MacLean's Language Arts class. Each student had to write about an experience in their life that was special to them and bring in a picture from the day or event. Using Power Point, they created slides which had both the text and the pictures on them. The memoirs were written and edited in language arts classes and then they worked in the technology labs to create the power point presentations. Lastly, students digitally recorded their voice overs in iMovie to accompany their presentation. Here is a sample
of their work.
